Additional Information

  • The Jesuit Missions:The Missions, also called Jesuit Reductions, were towns founded and created by the Catholic religious order named The Society of Jesus around the 17th and the 18th centuries.
  • Wanda Gemstones SiteWanda is an Argentinean town with a singular attraction . There is a deposit where precisous minerals are found near the surface, containing quartz crystals, amethysts, agates and topazes, just to name a few of the varieties

The tour goes to the ruins that used to be the Jesuit Mission of San Ignacio Mini, which are located in the town of San Ignacio, 240 km (149 mi) from the city of Puerto Iguazu, on the National route No 12.

This construction dates back to the 17th century, when the Jesuit missionaries settled up in this region. San Ignacio Mini was one of the flagship Jesuit reductions in South America and due to the excellent preservation of the Ruins today they allow to see how the project of converting the Guarani Indians operated. One can also observe proof of a powerful religious syncretism in the art and science.

The complex also has a Visitors´ Center which shows images and audio recordings of the jungle so as to tell about the history of the region and the native inhabitants, the Guaranies.

The Jesuit Ruins of San Ignacio Mini have been declared World Heritage Site in 1984 and constitute a true journey to the very beginning of colonization and conquer of the New World.

After this place, the trip continues heading back towards Puerto Iguazu and stopping at the Wanda Mines; they are a deposit of semiprecious stones, which is found 40 km from Puerto Iguazu. During this guided excursion, visitors will go and see the quarry with quartz crystal, amethysts, topaz, and agate in their “natural” state. There is also a store to buy sculpted stones and jewelry.
